A Burnt intro

Playing around with a photo of my new Jimi Hendrix album

Orange has been my favorite color since 1997. And it's really all because of Joe. He dipped one of his black and white photographs in orange dye one day and when I saw it, I was compelled to switch my fave from red to orange.

Burnt orange is an intriguing image to me that evokes fierce emotion, passion, and something that both creates and destroys. Joe has been the closest I've ever felt to having a soulmate but ultimately it didn't work out or end up that way. That part is "burnt". But burnt can still be beautiful.

So I guess the name itself is my way of honoring that. But "A Burnt Orange" isn't necessarily going to delve into my personal life or relationship details even though much of my art stems from the personal. This is intended to be more of a platform so that I can document my art and the stories behind them. I'd also like to express my thoughts and feelings of other artworks from time to time.

This was from my previous blog in 2020 called, From This Moment On: Tracking Down my Shots in the Light and Dark
Lead singer and guitarist Matt Legard saw one of my collages on Instagram and asked me if he could use it for their new album at the time, Staresque

This is how it came out.

My collage was originally much smaller, as a response to a collage challenge by Jack Ravi and Jane Chipp  To see it blown up in a vinyl size album is real nice and thrilling- and there's even some burnt orange in it!

I never purposely set out to design an album cover. What I intentionally do is search out inspiration. Or I let it come to me and try to be open to it-- Then I work on realizing my ideas, post/share, let it go, and see what happens and where it may go. And if nothing comes from it, and it has no place to "go", then at least my pieces can now find refuge here on A Burnt Orange

Enjoy xoxo

  1. You always said that orange combines the friendliness of yellow with the passion of red

  2. that (friendliness + passion) is the best description of orange i have heard. wow. i also love orange. i'd have to think on why. when i read the title "A Burnt Orange" i thought of "A Clockwork Orange". Clockwork being lifeless, mechanical and bereft of emotion. Clockwork Orang being an oxy-moron because oranges are so full of life... so A Burnt Orange being being hyperbolic as in consumed BY or consumed WITH life.
